Tips of the Trade: Selecting A Contractor
- Learn about your project. What is going to be done and what materials will be needed.
- Research where to get the financing for the project. The terms can vary greatly.
- Get recommendations for a contractor from people that you know who have actually used the contractor. Ask your friends, neighbors, coworkers and family members for suggestions.
- Check at the local BBB (Ph: 719 636-1155) and Regional Building (719-327-2880) offices to make sure that the contractor is licensed and does not have a pattern of causing complaints.
- Invite bids based on the same requirements-this means the same grade of materials-apples to apples. Ask for several trustworthy references and call and visit two to three sites.
- Look at previous work!
- Only sign a contract that specifies everything
in detail, including a payment schedule. Put everything in writing-leave
nothing to the spoken word.
